Bagdat Street, Istanbul

Bagdat Street

It has nothing to do with the Capital city of Iraq, Baghdat. it is just the name of the most famous street of Asian side in Istanbul.

Bagdat Street is the main shopping area of the Asian side of Istanbul. A one-way street full of shopping malls, Restaurants, Coffee shops, Elegant stores, Luxury car dealers, Banks and much more. All the international brands sit along side smaller independent shops, along with street stalls. Reminiscent of The Champs Elysee, Bagdat Street is a good place to wander around whilst doing a little window shopping.


Princess Islands, Istanbul

Princess Islands

The Princess Islands number nine in total, and are situated off the Asian coast of Istanbul, in the Sea of Marmara. There are regular passenger ferries to the four main islands from Bastanci. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the islands, and so people walk or rent a bicycle, horse drawn carriage or even donkey. The islands offer a pleasant retreat from the hustle of Istanbul.

Buyukada

This is the largest island in the chain, and the most heavily populated. Amongst the historic buildings are Aya Yorgi Church and Monastery from 6th century, Ayios Dimitrios Church, Hristos Church and Monastery, and Hamidiye Mosque built by sultan Abdulhamit II. Dil promontory is a favorite spot for picnickers, and Yoruk Ali beach is open to the public for swimmers. There are many restaurants, cafeterias and shops situated around the pier and also several hotels are available.

Heybeliada

There are two buildings that dominate the view of Heybeliada: The Greek Orthodox High School and Naval Academy. The Halki Palace is a well known hotel built in 1862 for the parents of the Greek high School, it was destroyed by a fire and than restored as a hotel in 1995. A small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands in the courtyard of the Naval Academy. Degirmen is a nice picnic area on the side facing to Kasik island, and there is also a public beach set in a nice cove and a water sports club on this side of Heybeli. There are many restaurants and cafeterias around the pier offering local dishes and fresh fish.

Burgazada

The island is famous for the house of Sait Faik Abasiyanik, famous Turkish story writer from the beginning of 20th century, who lived here. His house is now converted into a museum, and in Kalpazan Kaya, a place he used to visit often, there is now a cafeteria offering great views of the sunset. There is a nice sailing and water sports club and many rocky beaches. There are a selection of bars and restaurants around the pier.

Kinaliada

Kinaliada has beautiful summer homes, which people rent for the season. Its nice beaches attract many people from the city, Ayazma beach is one of them. Water Sports Club has an Olympic pool as well. Hristos Monastery is located up on a hill and was built by the Byzantine emperor Romanus IV (Diogenes) while he was exiled here and where he was buried. The monastery is open to the public only on Fridays. There are several restaurants and cafeterias along the pier, where there is a very modern mosque to the left.


Topkapı Palace

Topkapı Palace (or Topkapı Sarayı) or literally ”Cannongate Palace“ was the administrative centre of Istanbul from 1465 to 1853. The palace was ordered to be built by Sultan Mehmet II in 1459 and was completed in 1465. The palace is located on the Seraglio Point between the Golden Horn and Sea of Marmara, as has fantastic views of the Bosphorus.
